Scalia vs. The Universe Or: My Life And Hard Times is the latest book, a collection of humor, from the slightly warped mind of author Joseph E. Scalia. As the title indicates, it pits the narrator against The Universe in matters that range from encounters with Real Estate agents while attempting to buy a house to learning how to sail to dealing with a cheating fiancee. It isn't necessarily a pretty picture that Scalia paints of the narrator, a thinly veiled version of himself, but it is always a funny one. According to the author, who once taught English and Creative Writing to reluctant high school students, "Everything in SvU is true, that is, except of course, for the parts that I have exaggerated, fictionalized or totally made up."

Editorial Review

The best thing about Joseph E. Scalia's Scalia vs. The Universe is the sentence-level writing, which is smart, sharp, funny, and sophisticated. Unfortunately strong prose is not often in evidence in some of the entries for this contest, and thus, reading Scalia's book was something of a pleasure. The humor in these stories is infectious, and I did find myself laughing out loud throughout. I'm unsure just whether or not these stories are true, fictional, or in that no-man's-land in between, but whatever the case, Scalia enters David Sedaris territory quite well and makes it his own.  – 19th Annual Writer’s Digest Book Awards, Judge 42
